Paul Mitchell

Caring for the environment can extend beyond the actions that you take at home.  Supporting companies that are making smart decisions about the environment is hugely important as well.  This reinforces their behavior and hopefully will encourage other companies to do the same.  Paul Mitchell is one of those companies.  In 1987 they became the first beauty company to openly not support animal testing.  In the same year, Paul Mitchell started an sustainable, solar powered Awapuhi farm in Hawaii  (awapuhi is a product line of Paul Mitchell Systems).  All of this was well before “green” initiatives were trendy.  Big ups to them!

Don’t Idle!

Simply put, don’t idle in your car if you’re going to be parked for 10 seconds or longer!

When picking up a friend, going through a drive through, stopping for a red light, just turn off your car.  For every two minutes that a car is idling it uses about the same amount of fuel it would to drive 1 mile.

Additionally, ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than turning off the engine and restarting it.  So, if you know you will be stopped for at least 10 seconds, just turn off your ignition!

Public Transportation…

I haven’t posted an environmentally friendly tip for a while, so here you go:

Use public transportation, walk or ride a bike whenever possible! I am back east visiting my parents right now and I have barely used a car. It’s a really refreshing way to take on daily tasks and you get to spend more time outdoors. What could be better than that? Oh, yeah, and I get to eat more chocolate, because I’ve burnt more calories in my day! ;-)

Happy walking!
